Gear Up For Knicks Basketball

Iverson: Make Them Watchable

November 17th, 2009 at 9:23 am

If the Yankees’ World Series win is the Friday night party at the coolest house on campus then the Knickerbockers are the vomit in the toilet the next morning.

New York sports fans haven’t had much to root for since the Champs walked down the Canyon of Heroes and while the Jets and Giants are enough to make you crazy the Knicks can do little else but make you sick. Their 1-9 record is the worst start of a season in franchise history. Their levelheaded, Coach K product, sure-handed point guard is slowly losing his position to a FSU rookie. Their “star” is none other than the K-Mart poster boy Al Harrington (hold on, believe it or not it gets worse) their big man threat down low is Jared Jeffries and Wilson Chandler looks destined for the bench, making way for the feared return of Eddie “Lose 25 pounds” Curry.

The excitement that surrounded D Lee and Little Nate last year seemed to have died with their pitiful 1-year contracts signed during the offseason. Knick fans looking for something to cheer about are undoubtedly going to have to wait until next season, but the Knicks aren’t even generating interest let alone cheers. The Knicks are not only too sad to laugh at but too sad to watch.

The lack of ticket sales may be the only thing that makes Donnie Walsh (Fordham Prep) act like the team’s President of Basketball Operations and actually do something to help the team…operate. It looks as if he may flirt with the idea of signing Allen Iverson again. Iverson’s big name, big game (at least it was at one point), and big mouth (we talking ‘bout practice) could get people in New York to care about the Knicks again, or at least make them entertaining enough to watch.

Iverson, of course, would bring a whole new set of problems to the Knicks. Iverson has made it clear to the league that he considers himself a starter and with the Knicks already throwing in the towel for the ’09-10 season, it would be hard to “rebuild” with this washed up ball hog galloping down the hardwood.

It’s strange to think that Mr. Iverson would want to come to a team like the Knicks as a veteran still hoping to get a ring before he graduates to anchor man school. This former MVP would be coming to the worst tri-state area in basketball to help a team full of 1-year contracts. Especially considering the Knicks will be looking to have a team makeover with the big free agency year coming up. I don’t really see how it helps Iverson except for the fact that the Knicks are one of few teams that would consider starting him and the whole New York City/MSG factor seems like something Iverson could want.

Personally I’d love him to come. It would give my fellow Knicks fans and I a reason to turn on the game or even (gasp!) buy a ticket. He would be the biggest named player to hit New York since well…Patrick Ewing? It would be fun to see if the veteran could still break ankles with his crossover or find the hoop with contorted layups from absurd parts of the floor. Either way it would be better than what we’re watching now.

The Knicks can’t do much to fix this season but it would be greatly appreciated if they would at least make it watchable.

Marbury was awful for NY and I don't know how people let that happen for so long. But I don't think Iverson is as crazy and IS more talented

I hate Iverson, but it does make sense for the Knicks. If it's a 1 year deal and doesn't impact their cap space for the summer of 2010 free agency then why not? Walsh isn't into headcases... remember what happened to Marbury.
